This year we will cover a lot of topics in chemistry and physics and it's important that you know how to navigate and use this Canvas course to your advantage.

Today, we're going to talk about the syllabus, what's expected of you as a student, and walk through some of the Canvas basics you'll need to succeed in this classroom.

This page is the first stop in the Day 1 Module. Modules make it easy to navigate within a unit or project. If you scroll to the bottom of the page, you'll see a "next" button which will take you to the next part of the module. In a unit, this will be the next assignment or info page. You can jump around as much as you want by going to the Modules tab on the left side of your screen and clicking on a different part of a module.

While you wait for everyone to catch up, now is a good time to do the following things:

1. Edit your avatar - you can build a panda or take a quick selfie!

2. Edit your notification preferences

3. Download the Canvas or Canvas for Students app on your cell phone

To do the first two, follow the steps below on the iPad or on your freshly-downloaded mobile app. You will need to go back to the dashboard to find the icons. Do this by pushing "back" in the top left corner until you get to the screen with the course cards. Then:

1. Open your profile (top left corner, there's a little circle)

2. Tap on the big icon to create a panda avatar, take a photo, or upload a photo

3. Open settings to change your notification preferences

4. Open the notification preferences and change your settings. On your phone, you may need to allow push notifications first. Do this from your phone's settings app under "notifications" or "push notifications"
